Ian Metcher passed away peacefully on 11 July at the age of 98 years. He joined the Club 21 years ago, having obtained his licence at the age of 75. He obtained his aerobatics endorsement at the age of 78 and has actively pursued his desire for aerobatics ever since. In 2001, at the age of 86, he won the WA Light Aircraft Championship (aerobatics) and the Guinness Book of Records recognised him as the oldest competing aerobatic pilot in the world.
Ian and Pat have been regular visitors to the Club, whether to let Ian indulge in his passion for flying, to attend the Old Fliers Group or to simply come and meet friends. Ian inspired everyone he met with his cheerful, positive attitude to life. He lived his life to the full. Our condolences go to Pat and their family.
There will be a celebration of Ian’s life on Saturday 17 August at 11am in the Members’ Lounge with a missing man formation flypast at approximately 11.30am. All members who knew Ian are invited to come and meet Ian’s family and participate in the celebration.
