WHAT IS COMPETITION FLYING?

Competition flying is as much a personal challenge as it is pitting your skills against another pilot. We conduct a series of competitions throughout the year, some designed for fun and others based on internationally recognised criteria. You are scored for procedures, aircraft handling, conduct of the flight, approach and landing technique and accuracy of the landing. Your total is compared to other competitors and the person with the highest score wins. Interestingly this is not always the most experienced pilot with the highest number of hours! Our regular competitions at Jandakot are on the last Saturday of each month.

FASTEST CIRCUIT

Here’s your chance to get around the circuit at Jandakot as fast as possible. The idea is to fly a precise rectangular circuit as you would normally do but do it as fast as you can. (Oh, a little tip – you only have to be at 1000’AGL momentarily on downwind

Right Seat Circuit

Learn how your instructor feels! Flying the aeroplane from the right hand seat takes different coordination and reference points. This unusual competition allows you to practice for the day you may need to fly from the right hand seat.

INSTUMENTLESS CIRCUIT

Fly the circuit with NO reference to any flight instruments. You need to rely on references outside the aeroplane for attitude, altitude and direction. This will definitely increase your judgement and awareness.

INSTRUMENT CIRCUIT

When was the last time you practiced flying on instruments? This month you have the opportunity to do this with a difference – in the circuit area!! Fly the whole circuit “under the hood” as accurately as possible and you will win. Good for those long forgotten skills.

RUDDER CIRCUIT

How many times has your instructor told you to use more rudder? For this challenge you can ONLY use the rudder during turns. Now you have to use the rudder and see its effects on control of the aeroplane. Don’t forget also that you will have a secondary effect!

PRECISION CIRCUIT

For the perfectionist making the circuit as precise as possible is always the aim. So to for this competition. You have to fly the circuit as accurately as possible then land as close as possible to the nominated “spot”. Great for accuracy!

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE

Christmas comes early as the Club gives you two circuits for the price of one. The challenge is to perform a glide approach (when was the last time you practiced this?), followed by a low level circuit and spot landing. A busy time but great for your skills and great value.

NIGHT COMPETITION

Have you ever wondered what it is like to fly at night? Here is your chance to give it a go. These evenings are a great way to try a new skill, or perhaps to brush up on your currency. You will fly in the circuit area with an instructor and while this is a competition, you can also take the opportunity to enjoy the night scenery. As well as the opportunity to fly, enjoy the social aspect of the event with a BBQ before the competition then a quiet drink before the presentation of awards.
